Remember Roe v. Wade
The Well Timed Period offers A History Lesson, some recollections from doctors of life before Roe.
It’s gruesome, but that’s the point. Before Roe,
it was the job of the first-year resident to sleep all day, because he would be up all night scraping out the remains of illegal abortions, giving blood to the women who were bleeding, trying desperately to keep them out of shock and treating their infections
Remember, those women knew what the risks were when they got the abortion. They spent a lot of money and accepted the risk, all in hopes of living a slightly better life.
Some people call me doctrinaire in my defense of a woman’s right to privacy and her right to medical procedures. I think too few people understand the slaughter of adult women that Roe ended.
“Turn You Inside Out” by R.E.M. from the album Green (1988, 4:16).
Update: Let’s not forget this recent incident where the ban on “partial birth abortions” forced a woman to carry her dead fetus in her belly for weeks.
