Today, the Topeka Capital Journal ran this little piece by yours truly.
Will physicists have to justify teaching Newton’s theories next? (“Debate now an essay test,” 3/2/2005) The questions the Kansas Board of Education is asking about biology are based on the proposal written by the Intelligent Design Network, which the science standards committee already rejected. Now the Board wants scientists to justify the majority standards, even though they match recommendations of the scientific societies, international norms, and President Bush’s science advisor.
If intelligent design creationism is worth teaching our children, it ought to be able to sustain questions about the nature of the “designers,” not just take pot-shots at widely used and well-documented scientific methods and ideas.
