This is a beetle in the family Carabidae. The family is among the most speciose of the beetles, which are themselves the most diverse insects. And insects are the most diverse animals.
This species is beautifully iridescent, and it’s quite big. They hunt and eat caterpillars, hence their common name “caterpillar hunters.” You can catch them here through the summer, out at lights.
