Papers against Schiavo-inspired law
The Winfield Courier writes about The Schiavo syndrome:
In the wake of the sad affair of Terri Schiavo, the Kansas Legislature should not make the same mistake the U.S. Congress did.
That mistake would be to act too quickly and without reflection on an end-of-life issue.
It may be that Kansas law should be updated in light of discussions about Terri Schiavo, but the worst possible thing would be replacing the status quo – that people have already made decisions under – and slap something together. These laws have complex and unforeseen consequences, as seen in Texas, and should be drafted with contributions from doctors, judges, senior citizens, disability rights activists, etc.
There’s no rush, so there’s no excuse for making mistakes due to haste.
