In the wake of the sad affair of Ter­ri Schi­a­vo, the Kansas Leg­is­la­ture should not make the same mis­take the U.S. Con­gress did.

That mis­take would be to act too quick­ly and with­out reflec­tion on an end-of-life issue. 

It may be that Kansas law should be updat­ed in light of dis­cus­sions about Ter­ri Schi­a­vo, but the worst pos­si­ble thing would be replac­ing the sta­tus quo – that peo­ple have already made deci­sions under – and slap some­thing togeth­er. These laws have com­plex and unfore­seen con­se­quences, as seen in Texas, and should be draft­ed with con­tri­bu­tions from doc­tors, judges, senior cit­i­zens, dis­abil­i­ty rights activists, etc.

There’s no rush, so there’s no excuse for mak­ing mis­takes due to haste.
