Santorum misses the point
TalkLeft points to an article with a scary headline and a funny quote, Frist starts countdown to final vote on nominee:
Santorum issued his own clarification yesterday evening, stating that the reference to Hitler was “meant to dramatize the principle of an argument, not to characterize my Democratic colleagues.”
“My point was that it is preposterous for someone to trample a well-established principle, and then accuse his opponents of acting unlawfully when they try to reestablish that principle,” Santorum said. “Nevertheless, it was a mistake and I meant no offense.”
I’ve already responded to the merits of the case and the hypocrisy of its phrasing. Why not simply withdraw the analogy altogether? Because the filibuster has 214 years of tradition, and judges have been filibustered since Santorum has been a Senator. So the statement, like Santorum himself, is wrong and offensive.
