According to the July 23 memo, Dearlove reported “a perceptible shift in attitude” in Washington. “Military action was now seen as inevitable,” the memo said, adding that the president’s National Security Council “had no patience with the U.N. route.” Dearlove also included the observation that “the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy.”
These memos show several things. First, the Bushies never intended to do anything that would avert war. They were dead set on this invasion to begin with, and still seem to have no plan for ending this.
Second, the increased number of airstrikes was intended to provoke Saddam into attacking us, giving us casus belli.
Anyone who watched tonight’s speech didn’t see an answer to the big question: What’s going on and when will our friends and family come home? Given that they were planning the campaign of lies that got us there for a year ahead of the invasion, is it so much to ask that they have a plan (not necessarily a fixed date, but clear criteria) for withdrawing.
