Sen­a­tor Brown­back met with Ms. Miers:

“No promis­es were made either way,” Mr. Brown­back said. He said he would con­sid­er vot­ing against the nom­i­na­tion, even if Pres­i­dent Bush made a per­son­al plea for his support.

Hard not to read this as Brown­back posi­tion­ing him­self solid­ly to the right of Bush in prepa­ra­tion for a Pres­i­den­tial run. 

In unre­lat­ed news, Bush’s approval rat­ing is 37%, and the stan­dard “right direction/wrong direc­tion” ques­tion is as far to the “wrong direc­tion” side as it’s ever been.

Clear­ly, there’s no rea­son to try rid­ing those coattails.
