Brownback runs to the starboard
Senator Brownback met with Ms. Miers:
“No promises were made either way,” Mr. Brownback said. He said he would consider voting against the nomination, even if President Bush made a personal plea for his support.
Hard not to read this as Brownback positioning himself solidly to the right of Bush in preparation for a Presidential run.
In unrelated news, Bush’s approval rating is 37%, and the standard “right direction/wrong direction” question is as far to the “wrong direction” side as it’s ever been.
Clearly, there’s no reason to try riding those coattails.
