As the State Board of Education attacks the teaching of evolution, the two KU professors get a grant to help fund Tree of Life:
Two Kansas University professors have received $1.6 million in grant funds to lend their expertise to the National Science Foundation’s effort to assemble the evolutionary Tree of Life.
Drs. Cartwright and Fautin are developing the phylogeny of the cnidaria, focusing on corals. The grant signifies that KU has among the top collections of cnidaria and among the top researchers on those animals. Kansas and Kansans should be proud of that, and the dominance of KU in the field of evolutionary biology should be a point of pride.
Instead, we’re forced to explain over and over that there’s no contradiction between being in Kansas and studying evolution.
It gets old.
