Last night, the President called for Congress to give him a line-item veto. This was a standard part of Clinton’s SotU’s, until Congress passed one, he used it, someone sued, and the Supreme Court held that line-item vetoes are un-Constitutional.
Why did the President call for Congress to violate the Constitutional separation of powers? Does no one proof-read the speech? Do the readers not know basic facts about the last ten years’ worth of Supreme Court rulings? Maybe someone did strike the line, then the President or some hack advisor said “Who cares that it’s illegal, it’s good politics!”
Such a cavalier attitude towards the law ill-befits the Chief Executive.
