There’s something appropriate about having an election on the first day of our celebration of freedom.
Turnout has reportedly been light, so be sure to vote today. In Lawrence, you can figure out which candidates best match your views with the Journal-World’s handy candidate selector for the school board and the city commission.

On the School Board, Diane recommends Merrill, Minder, Pomes and Machell.
Mike, who is focussed on domestic partner benefits, recommends: Merrill, Minder and Pomes, with half of an endorsement for Machell and Loveland.
I’m leaning away from Loveland because of this comment in a Journal-World chat:
Since I did not file with a preset adgenda, I don’t have any accomplishments planned. I have a personal policy of not making any campaign promises other than that I will explore or study every issue as thoroughly as I can, examine the pros and cons of all potential decisions, and make a decision based on my conclusions as to what is best for the education of the school children of Lawrence Public Schools.
I don’t know what that means. She served on the Board before, and ought to have some ideas about what needs to be done. She should have studied many of the issues at hand already. Lame. That mean’s I’ll probably vote Merrill, Minder, Pomes and Machell.
Scott Morgan got the KFUPE endorsement, but people have concerns about him.
Do not, under any circumstances, vote for Robert Rauktis. The man bears an uncanny resemblance to a crank.
